This image depicts three men standing at the low stone wall of “The Angle”, looking out across the rolling fields between Cemetery and Seminary Ridges. The man in the bowler hat at left is sporting some type of GAR or reunion ribbon while the man at right has some type of light-colored lapel accessory. The 71st Pennsylvania’s monument was dedicated in 1887, dating this photo to a point in time prior to that.
The image is in excellent condition and is mounted to a larger, light-gray card. The card is also in a nice condition, with no discernable damage and only miniscule wear to the upper left corner – a true rarity among early mounted Gettysburg photos. The reverse is a darker gray with a notation at upper left in lightly oxidized period ink reading “Gettysburg – at “the bloody angle” Pickett’s Charge was made from the woods in the distance on the Extreme left./Platinum print”. A separate, penciled marking at the top reads “Gettysburg 75-“. The glue used to mount the image left a very light section of bleed through tracing the picture on the front. Overall measurements are 8.4” x 11”.
An interesting snapshot of veterans visiting one of the most climactic locations on the Gettysburg Battlefield. Worthy of collecting and an ideal display piece. [cm][ph:L]
