Camp Quay was a Pennsylvania National Guard camp established for a short summer term in 1904. The 8th Pennsylvania, featured in this photo, camped near the Sherfy Peach Orchard for several weeks to train directly on the battlefield. Accompanying cavalry and artillery units were camped along the Chambersburg Pike and the remainder of the 3rd National Guard Brigade of Pennsylvania camped along an extension of Washington Street. By July 30th, the camp was closed.
The long photo is mounted to a dark gray card with a hand written label at low center reading “8th Reg. N. G. of Penna./Taken at Camp Quay 1904.”. The photo itself is in good condition with expected light surface marks and a few small dents (which can only be seen at an angle under bright lighting). None of these imperfections compromise the character or display qualities of the image. The card is in good condition, save for light surface layer flaking along some areas of the edges and a crease at the upper right corner. The reverse is light gray and blank. Some light discoloration and light surface staining are noted. Overall measurements are 8.5” x 19.9”.
Very few photos exist of Camp Quay, likely making this a unique chance to own a record of a little-studied event in post-battle history. [cm][ph:L]
