Commercialization is as much a part of Gettysburg’s history as the battle itself. Offered here is a small photo, matted by a partially removeable border with a miniature 1920 calendar attached at the bottom of the mounting frame card. Featured in the photo are three young ladies posing in front of the Virginia State Monument on Seminary Ridge. The tiny calendar is complete and is bound by stitching and attached with glue. On the cover is a stylized illustration of man and woman in 1920’s attire and text which reads “Friendship is the only Rose without a Thorn”.
The outer front border frame is torn at left but can be lifted to reveal an oxidized ink notation that says, “See Monument Gettysburg”. The top center of the piece has two small mounting holes for hanging. The border frame and photo are mounted to a gray card of differing shades which shows wear to the corners and loss at bottom right. The photo shows light staining, which is hidden by the border. The reverse is blank, save for the name “Kathryn” written in pencil. The card measures 5.5” x 9.5”. The border section measures 4.3” x 8.1” and the photo itself measures approximately 3” x 5”.
An uncommonly seen remnant from a bygone era of a happy memory. A nice piece for the Gettysburg collector - an early image of the Virginia Memorial and an artifact of past commercial tourism offerings. [cm][ph:L]
