This mounted photograph is quite special among Grand Army of the Republic items. It features nine Post members –a select group of surviving veterans who participated in the Battle of Gettysburg.
While the gentleman at center is wearing his general membership ribbon, several others are sporting 1913 New York State Gettysburg Reunion Medals on their vests, providing us with a clue that the photograph was taken sometime thereafter.
The photo was taken inside the Lewis O. Morris GAR Post 121 of Albany, New York. The post was named for Colonel Lewis Morris of the 135th New York (later the 6th New York Heavy Artillery), mortally wounded at Cold Harbor on June 3rd, 1864.
The photo is mounted to a light gray card with decorative borders and remains in good condition. Minor scratching is noted across the face of the veteran at far right with miniscule rolling at the left edge of the photo. At the photo’s bottom border, it is labeled “Gettysburg Reunion Club” in a gothic revival font. The mounting card is in good condition with only a couple of very light stains. There is light corner wear as expected from a century of handling, display, or storage – and a small dent at the bottom edge. The reverse is blank with a small area of outer layer loss due to the removal of an adhesive tag at some point. Written in pencil at upper center is “Albany, NY”. Overall measurements are 8” x 9.95”.
This is a rare photograph that deserves a place in any serious Gettysburg or Civil War collection. [cm][ph:L]
