The 29th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry was first assigned a section of the line on Culp’s Hill. As the Confederates smashed Sickles’ line and drove for the Union center, the 29th was among the units pulled from their posting and sent to reinforce and stabilize the situation. By the time they returned to their initial position, the Confederates had occupied the area and were launching a massive nocturnal assault on the rest of Culp’s Hill. After repeated assaults were repulsed during the longest sustained fighting of the Battle of Gettysburg, the 29th reoccupied the position just to the front of their monument, facing the wooded slope of lower Culp’s Hill.
This cabinet card photo is unmarked, but in good condition. The mounting card has a minor dent along the top edge and minimal corner wear at low right. The photo print itself is wholly undamaged save for a miniscule smudge at low right, and is surrounded by a black, single-line border. The monument is near the center of the frame and much of its text is clear and legible. The small tree line overlooking Pardee Field comprises the background, with the tallest slightly blurred – likely from wind movement during exposure. The reverse is pink and marked in pencil “29th PA. P.I. MONUMENT GETTYSBURG” and a small modern sticker at upper right reads “[?] Cab 27”. Some minor surface dirt and a very small water stain are noted. Overall measurements of the card are 6.5” x 4.25”.
A handsome view of one of the key areas of the battlefield with plenty of later period character, this photo would display or fit well among any collection of Gettysburg photography and memorabilia. [cm][ph:L]
