This document measures 13.75” x 10.75” and features two views of the key defensive position.

The top photograph shows an early scene, complete with the comparatively crude early road that allowed tourists to navigate the line of Greene’s New Yorkers, where they held back superior enemy numbers during the longest sustained combat of the battle of Gettysburg. The line of breastworks is visible, and the base of the 78th and 102nd New York Infantry monument can be clearly seen. A script caption reads “Line of Breastworks on Culp’s Hill Occupied by Greene”.

The lower photograph shows battle-scarred trees in front of Greene’s defensive position, complete with scores of bullet holes and grazing marks. Such remnants of the battle drew throngs of early visitors who were intrigued by the evidence of the ferocity of the fighting in that area. A script caption reads “Scarred Trees in Front of Greene’s Position Culp’s Hill”.

Between each caption is a script “Gettysburg” bordered by two decorative lines.

There is no edge damage, save for the area at low left where it was presumably removed from its album binding.  The reverse shows a large area of likely water damage, but it does not bleed through to the front – save for a small edge section at upper right as shown - or compromise the images, captions, or display possibilities of this rare piece.

This early Gettysburg piece is surely quite rare, and details one of the most important positions of the Union line during the battle as seen by some of the first tourists to view the field.  If you are a collector of early Gettysburg memorabilia or a Culp’s Hill enthusiast, this is a prime piece to add to your collection.  It has an elegant Victorian-style character and would display beautifully.  [cm][ph:cm/L]
