Born in Gettysburg in 1850, William H. Tipton learned photography as a member of the Tyson brothers’ studio at least as early as 1863 and actually appears seated in their photographic wagon in an outdoor Gettysburg view probably taken in 1863 according to Frassanito. He managed the business from 1866 to 1868 when he purchased it with R.A. Myers after the Tyson brothers dissolved their partnership and operated it as Tipton & Myers until Myers’s interest was bought out by C.J. Tyson in 1873, though Tipton ran it as W.H. Tipton & Co. until 1883, buying out Tyson and running it as simply “W.H. Tipton” from then until his death in 1929.
This is a very good condition view, titled in the negative at lower right, “383- FORTIFICATIONS ON LITTLE ROUND TOP.” In Tipton’s 1894 catalog it is listed as a medium size view titled fully, “Fortifications on Little Round Top looking towards Cemetery Hill.” A barn, outbuilding and farmhouse are visible in the middle ground at left, with more visible in the middle with a ridge in the distance. In the foreground are natural rocks and boulders that show the addition of small rocks at right placed by Union defenders to form breastworks and shelter against potential renewed Confederate attacks and sharpshooters after the repulse of the main attacks on July 2. The card is marked at left, “W.H. Tipton” in imitation of his signature and at right “GETTYSBURG, PA.” in larger, serifed block letters. By Frassanito’s chronology, upon which we rely above, his production of Gettysburg views began in earnest about 1878, sparked by the G.A.R. reunion there that summer. The condition is excellent.
Photo measures 7 ¾” x 5” on an 8 ½” x 5 ¼” mount. [SR][ph:m]
