This shell is part of the collection that was housed at the York Springs GAR Post 551. Many of the items were collected and curated by David Starry, a Civil War veteran who served in an emergency regiment detailed to the Military District of Gettysburg after the battle for administrative, medical, and cleanup duties, before being mustered out in town.
This shell includes the upper assembly that holds the explosive charge, and is missing the fuse, sabot, and lower portion. The condition is fair, not quite dug, but shows surface rust. The section that held the charge still retains some of the original powder, which has since clung together into large pieces.
An antique tag with nice rusted brown ink of the period reads “Gettysburg, Pa.” in a cursive script. This likely denotes the shell as a post battle pickup, as traces of the lead sabot suggest it was fired before recovery.
This is a unique shell, with a connection to both the Grand Army of the Republic and the Battle of Gettysburg. [cm][ph:L]
