Early Gettysburg Round Top pyrography souvenir wood cane. The handle retains some of the original bark. Near the top Round Top has been boldly outlined by burning the wood. The shaft has been decorated with wavy lines created by lightly burning the surface. The wood was most likely collected from Round Top and sold to a returning veteran of the battle. The large wood cane is 36” long.
Included above is a scan of a photo of several young local Gettysburg boys who had a thriving business which involved gathering wood from various spots on the battlefield, and burning the names of the locations onto them and selling them as canes to returning veterans. This photo is dated 1900 and was included in the book Adams County Area Pictorial History published in 1996 by the Gettysburg Times. [dm][ph:L]
