Original “Souvenir [of the] Cyclorama of Gettysburg” with two stereoscopic views of the painting. Thirty-eight pages with the foldout keyed birds-eye view of the painting showing the climactic fighting of July 3 and Pickett’s Charge. This was the second of Paul Philipotteaux’s cycloramas of the battle- the first was put on display in Chicago in 1883 after a year and a half of work following detailed onsite drawings and photography of the battlefield. This second version of cyclorama, the one that survives today, was opened to the public in Boston in 1884 and in business for about twenty years. Later purchased by some local entrepreneurs, it was moved here and opened in time for the 1913 fiftieth anniversary of the battle. Acquired by the Park Service in 1942 and on view again from 1962, it has undergone several expensive restorations, the most recent from 2003 to 2008 and now may again be visited for the full experience. (Portions of the 1882 version apparently still exist, though in poor condition. Of two later versions, one was eventually cut up for tent material and the fate of the other is unknown.)

This printing of the souvenir booklet is 38 pages long, containing advertisements and battle details, along with a solicitation for additional advertisements from a Boston firm. The first ten pages are loose, but the foldout plate is there, with some old tape repairs to folds. The two stereocards are Kilburn views copyrighted 1892. One is a bit light and has an owner’s name on the back along with “No. 61,” likely her own collection number. The other is very good.  [sr][ph:L]
