June 14—Pleasanton to Hooker:
“Gaines cross road is on the road from Culpepper to Chester Gap—I have information that the Rebel Column passed this Chester Gap on Thursday & Friday 15,ooo Infantry & artillery & a good deal of Cavalry were left in Culpepper and are now there. My scouts just in from Barber’s Cross Roads & Chester Gap no signs of enemy between this & those points—shots were heard today a long distance off in direction of Harper’s Ferry / A. Pleasanton”
June 21—Sandy Hook--Tyler to Hooker (3 pp.):
Lt. F.G. Martindale of the 1st N.Y. Cavy left the mountain between Sharpsburg & the Shepherdstown ford, at the bunt Mill at 5 O’Clock this AM. where he said he could see into the camps clear & sure. He says troops were passing the ford towards Sharpsburg & he estimates the entire force at about twenty thousand (20,000), He says he saw Regts. Laying in the open fields without any attempt at concealment. He saw only one (1) batty sure, but he thinks he saw between 300 & four hundred (400) wagons & also saw wagons coming into sharpsburg, at slow gait as if heavily loaded from the direction of Boonesboro & Hagerstown. Saw one (1) Regt of Infy go out on the Boonesboro road & it did not return during the six or seven hours he was examining the troops , etc, etc. Lt. Martindale saw little cavy in proportion to the Infy.. / Danl tyler / B.G.
June 24—Maryland Heights—Tyler to Schenk:
We have captured some officers & men today. The rebels in large force are moving on Hagerstown. Ewell’s and Longstreets Corps have passed the ford at Shepherdstown and taken the route by Boonesboro to Hagerstown. Ewell has passed beyond Hagerstown toward Chambersburg / Genl Tyler / Brig. Genl.
These telegrams present a fascinating glimpse of Federal intelligence tracking Lee’s army during its march north through Maryland toward Chambersburg, PA, in days prior to Hooker’s replacement by Meade as AOP Commander.
Excellent Gettysburg Campaign collectible. In protective sleeve. [jp][ph:L]
