Offered here is a relic of the Battle of Gettysburg. This is an oval U.S. waist belt plate.
This piece is in “farm field, relic” condition and was recovered long ago by a local relic hunter. The brass face clearly features most of the central “US” and has an overall brown patina. About a third of the plate (over the “S”) is missing and there are a few nicks across the face.
The lead fill in the back shows matching loss but all three belt hooks remain. This type of damage is typical of items recovered from cultivated farm fields where plows and fertilizers are used.
Recovered near Power’s Hill along Baltimore Pike. [jet][PH:L]
