Offered here is a relic of the Battle of Gettysburg. This is an oval U.S. plate that would have been attached to the front flap of an infantry cartridge box.
This piece is in “farm field, relic” condition and was recovered long ago by a local relic hunter. The brass face clearly features the central “US” and has a green/brown patina. Significant edge loss and a few nicks across the face.
The lead fill in the back shows matching loss around the edge and both iron loops have rusted away. This type of damage is typical of items recovered from cultivated farm fields where plows and fertilizers are used.
Recovered on the grounds of the Swartz Farm where the U.S. 3rd Corps field hospital was located. [jet][PH:L]
