Authentic Civil War letter written by Isaac Sperry. Sperry served with the 73rd OH Infantry form December of 1861 until he was wounded on the 1st day of the Battle of Gettysburg. The archive states that he was wounded through the lungs and died of his wounds three days later at the 11th Corps Hospital.
This letter is nicely written in pencil. The front of the page has a fine patriotic design of US flag and proudly states “HEADQUARTERS 73D REG’T O.V.” It also has the saying “The star spangled banner, o long may it wave! Over the land of the free and the home of the brave.”
The letter was written January 27, 1862. Sperry writes that they are in camp and that they are near the 9th Indiana and some are “telling some big tales.” They have been in service for six months. He tells of talking with a local lady and states that she is “Union all over” but one brother in the Union army and one in the “secesh” army. He adds that he would like to see the chaplain and that he “…would like to have some preaching once and awhile.” He tells them to write to him in care of his captain. This is a nice, original letter that is accompanied by the brief history of Sperry and the 73rd Ohio.
Sperry enlisted at the age of 36 as a Private on 12/6/61. On 12/31/61 he mustered into Co. G, 73rd Ohio Infantry. He died on 7/5/63 and is buried in Soldiers National Cemetery in Gettysburg. [ph:L]
