Authentic Civil War letter written by Isaac Sperry. Sperry served with the 73rd Ohio Infantry from December 1861 until he was wounded on the 1st Day of the Battle of Gettysburg. He was wounded through the lungs and died of his wounds three days later at the 11th Corps Hospital.
This letter is nicely written in pencil. The front of the page has a fine patriotic design of the US flag and proudly states “HEAD QUARTERS 73D REG’T O.V.” It also has the saying of “The star spangled banner, o long may it wave! Over the land of the free and the home of the brave.” It was written on December 12, 1861 from Camp Logan. He writes to his wife that in her last letter his daughter was sick. He says he asked off to come home but they wouldn’t let him go. He writes how he wishes he could come home and seems to really be concerned about his family. On the back page he states that “…we have some good boys and some hard ones here…” when he is talking about his fellow soldiers. He states to direct his letters to Chillicothe, OH.
Sperry enlisted at the age of 36 as a Private on 12/6/61. On 12/31/61 he mustered into Co. G, 73rd Ohio Infantry. He died on 7/5/63 and is buried in Soldiers National Cemetery in Gettysburg. [ph:L]
