This excavated Pattern 1839 US waist belt plate has a smooth brown patina on the face under some residual dirt. The oval brass face features a raised “US” and an old paper label “220”.
The plate’s reverse has 99% of the lead fill and features the “puppy paw” style of belt hooks. A maker’s mark is stamped in the center of the lead, “W.H. SMITH / BROOKLYN”.
This relic, with its numbered label, was likely from a G.A.R. Post or veteran’s relic filled shadow box. This buckle is pictured on page 280 of Mike O’Donnell’s book about Gettysburg relics. [jet] [PH:L]
