Nice red veteran’s ribbon worn for the dedication of the 83rd New York Infantry’s monument at Gettysburg in 1888.
Red silk ribbon with brass pin bar at top. Measures 6” long x 2.25” wide. Spring “safety” pin on back of brass bar. Gold print on ribbon reads, “NINTH / REGIMENT / N.Y.S.M – N.G.S.N.Y. / 83d N.Y. Vols / DEDICATION / of / MONUMENT / GETTYSBURG / JULY 1ST, 1888.”
Very good condition overall with some fraying along bottom edge.
The 83rd New York Infantry was commanded at the Battle of Gettysburg by Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Moesch. It brought 215 men to the field, losing 6 killed, 18 wounded and 58 missing. The monument to the 83rd New York is a tall obelisk of two alternating colors of Granite. It is located on the 1st Days battlefield northwest of Gettysburg on Doubleday Avenue south of the observation tower. [jet][ph:L]
