This is a larger version of the typical three-piece Hotchkiss artillery shell. Made to be fired from the 14-pounder James Rifles.

All three pieces are present: nose, sabot, and base cup. No flame grooves. This shell was fired and the lead sabot shows the rifling. Iron shows expected surface pitting.

This was purchased from the auction of Ken Bream’s relic collection. When found the Hotchkiss fuse adaptor was blown out. For some unknown reason Ken replaced it with a copper Confederate fuse adaptor. Ken also painted “BARLOW KNOLL” in white on the side of the shell.

There were several James Rifles present at Gettysburg but none known to be used on July 1. Was this a wild, errant shot, or maybe just tossed aside as unwanted debris following the battle? We’ll likely never know, but that’s the area where it was recovered by Mr. Bream. This isn’t the first item recovered from Gettysburg that supposedly “wasn’t used there” or was from “the wrong area of the Battlefield.”

This is a nice Gettysburg relic.  [jet] [ph:L]
