This silver badge is crescent shaped and meas. approx. 1.00 inch long. It is engraved around the edges with a linear decoration and engraved on its face is “SKIDS.” Reverse has the remains of a “T” bar pin.

Research only reveals one name that matches. That soldier is Sidney W. Kidds who served in the 52nd North Carolina and was captured at Falling Waters during the retreat from Gettysburg. This item was recovered in the Falling Waters area.

William Sidney Kidds, listed in the records as Sidney W. Kidds, was born November 30, 1834 in Montgomery County, North Carolina. Enlistment records say he was from Lincoln County, North Carolina and was 27 years old when he enlisted in Company G, 52nd North Carolina Infantry at Camp French in Petersburg, Va. on September 22, 1862.

The first fight for Kidds was the battle of Gettysburg and during the retreat he was captured at Falling Waters. He was sent to Baltimore and from there to Point Lookout. He took the Oath of Allegiance on January 29, 1864 and became a “galvanized Yankee” in Company C, 1st Volunteers. He served with the regiment in St. Louis and was promoted to Corporal in July of 1864. He deserted from Fort Rice in the Dakota Territory September 11, 1865. He was described as being 5’ 9 ½” tall with hazel eyes, black hair and a dark complexion.

After the war he married and raised seven children. He died in Hickory, Catawba County, North Carolina on July 19, 1927 and is buried in Bethel United Methodists Church Cemetery in Denver, Lincoln County, North Carolina.

A brief amount of research material comes with the item.    [ad][ph:L]
