Brick meas. approx. 8.00 x 4.00 x 2.25 inches. It shows light edge wear from use but is in otherwise nice condition.
A modern tag attached to it reads “GEORGE SCHRIVER HOUSE – SIDEWALK #311 BALTIMORE ST.”
The home of George and Hettie Shriver was built on Baltimore St. just months before the Civil War began. It was occupied by Confederate forces during the battle of Gettysburg with its upper levels being used to fire towards East Cemetery Hill and in the area of the building now referred to as the Jennie Wade House Museum. Before the restoration of the Shrivers’ home in 1996, it had been abandoned for nearly thirty years, had missing window panes, no electricity, no water, no heat and a serious leak in the roof. The home has been altered very little since the war.
Brick comes from a Richmond collector who had longtime friends here in Gettysburg through whom the brick was procured. [ad] [ph:L]
