Approximately 1,870 Union and Confederate veterans gathered for the 75th Anniversary of the battle of Gettysburg in what would be known as the ‘the last’ large scale gathering. Tent villages were constructed to house both former Union and Confederate soldiers. The highlight of the days’ events was the dedication of the Eternal Peace Light Memorial with a speech given by President Roosevelt in real time with Pickett’s Charge. The former soldiers also walked the battlelines of the charge and had a ceremonial handshake at the Bloody Angle. This theme of unity was overarching throughout the 75th Anniversary and stemmed down to the medals that were distributed. Medals given to the veterans were adorned with a blue and gray ribbon featuring an eagle clutching both battle flags.
The image here depicts both Union and Confederate veterans nestled in their camp villages for the day on the observance of the 75th Anniversary of the battle of Gettysburg.
This is an original black and white wire photo. [mc] [ph:L]
