This is an excavated chunk of a 3” Hotchkiss artillery shell. This common size was for the 3” Ordnance rifle or Parrott rifle.
This shell was fired and has exploded; but not completely. About half of the nose section is blown away, but about half remains as does the lead sabot and the base cup. Lead sabot clearly shows rifling from the cannon barrel.
The iron and lead show rust and oxidation and the piece is in typical “dug” condition. Flame grooves run up the sides.
Recovered from the Lady Farm behind Benner Hill at Gettysburg, PA. [jet] [ph:L]
