Broadside endorsing Captain Jason T. Long’s annual tour of the Gettysburg battlefield. Captain Long followed the tradition of veterans serving as the earliest battlefield guides. He served with Company B, 99th Pennsylvania Volunteers from June 1861 till his discharge in April 1862, then reenlistment as Private with Company G, 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry with a promotion to Sergeant, then Sergeant Major. Later he was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in 1864 and transferred to Company A, 21st Pennsylvania Cavalry. There, he would muster out with the regiment as Captain in August of 1865.
The broadside provides a brief description/ synopsis of the Battle of Gettysburg and primarily, reviews of Captain Long’s tours and lectures. All commentary noted that he drew a “large and appreciative” audience. What is unique about Captain Jason’s lecture is his use of illustrated images, oxy-hydrogen, and a stereopticon to give his images a more ‘lifelike’ timbre. Lectures were given in town and in part, sponsored by GAR Post 51, in which he was member.
A copy of a speech Captain Jason Long gave at the 43rd Annual Reunion of the 143rd Regiment of Pennsylvania Volunteers accompanies the broadside.
Paper is extremely fragile, with a minor tear along the bottom and on the centerfold. There is a distinct center fold from the paper being stored folded in half. Mild discoloration is evident along the top and sides. On reverse is a map of the trajectory of battle of Gettysburg including red and blue color lines to indicate Union and Confederate troop movements. The paper has a translucent quality, where the front bleeds through to the back. [mc] [ph:L]
