Here is a “dug” button from Gettysburg. It is a Massachusetts state seal coat button, 23mm. Good detail on the face but no gilt remaining. Black patina, so likely was from a fire pit. Straight shank, “STEELE & JOHNSON” backmark.
Recovered at the of the Union 3rd Corps Field Hospital by Ed Miller.
The 3rd Corps set up their hospital on a portion of the Jacob Schwartz Farm near White Run. This was near and somewhat intermingled with the 2nd Corps Hospital. The 3rd Corps Hospital grew to hold over 2500 wounded Union and Confederate soldiers. [jet] [PH:L]
