This magnificent statue is a depiction of Union 1st Corps commander Maj. Gen. John F. Reynolds arriving on horseback on July 1st, 1863 at the beginning of the three day battle of Gettysburg, and conferring with Union Cavalry General John Buford.  Reynolds would soon be killed in action near Herbst’s Woods, being struck in the back of the neck and falling from his horse.

The sculpture stands 11.5 inches tall and measures 10 inches wide.  The wooden base measures approx. 12” x 10” x 1 ¾”. This heavy statue, which is true bronze, not resin, weighs 19 lbs. Overall excellent condition and a wonderful piece of art.

The signature on the bronze base is, “Ron Tunison * S.A.H.A. © 88 A.P.G. 4/20”, followed by what may be an intertwined “R” and “T”. Though numbered 4 of 20, there may have been less than 20 of this version of the statue produced.

The Society of American Historical Artists (SAHA) was formed by Tunison with 5 other artists; its mission mission is the preservation and portrayal of historical art.

The Artist Preservation Group (A.P.G.) is a gathering of like-minded historical artists whose mission is to generate capital, through fundraising and donations, to aide in the preservation and restoration of threatened historical sites and/or artifacts. They are committed to using their artistic talents to actively support historical sites as they continue their dedication to the preservation, restoration, and interpretation of events that shaped history.

Ron Tunison (1947 – 2013) was born in Richmond Hill, N.Y., and was a graduate of the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan. He was a scholarship student at the NYC National Academy where he continued his sculpting studies. He went on to become an internationally acclaimed sculptor of nine heroic bronze monuments: "General W. Crawford," near Little Round Top on the Gettysburg Battlefield, the “Friend to Friend Masonic Memorial" on Steinwehr Ave., the bas-relief "Delaware State Memorial" on Taneytown Road, and "The Gettysburg Civil War Women's Memorial" at Evergreen Cemetery. On the Antietam National Battlefield is Tunison's "Irish Brigade Monument." "The Bivouac" is at the entrance to the Civil War Soldier's Museum at Pamplin Historical Park near Petersburg, Va. "The Delaware Continentals" heroic size bronze of three advancing Revolutionary War soldiers stands atop a twenty-five foot granite pedestal in front of Legislative Hall at Dover, Delaware. At Ringgold Gap in Atlanta, Ga., is Ron's life-size General Patrick Cleburne. Dedication ceremonies for “General John Barry, U.S. Naval Commander”, took place May 10th, 2014 at U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD.  Ron was the entrepreneur behind his own company Historical Sculptures, where he sculpted smaller statues.
