Offered here is a carte de viste (CDV) photograph recorded while the Soldiers National Monument was still under construction in the National Cemetery at Gettysburg. At the phase of construction shown in the image, there are only two of the four statues mounted around the base of the monument.

See William Frassanito’s “Early Photography at Gettysburg” pages 190-192 for a complete discussion regarding this photograph and its rarity. According to him, this photograph was recorded in late June 1869.

The photograph shows the progress of the construction with scaffolding and pullies around the monument. The statue on top is in place as are two of the four surrounding the base. There is construction debris scattered in the foreground. The four corners of the mount are trimmed to fit in an album. Written in ink at the bottom, “Monument in National Cemetery, Gettysburg, Pa. Dedicated July 1, 1869.” The back of the card features a nicely printed Tipton & Myers backmark. Above the backmark in ink is “Best wishes & Complements of yours truly, Tom.”

A rare piece of early Gettysburg photography.   [jet] [ph:L]
