Visits to Gettysburg began as early as the days directly following the battle and became increasingly popular in the proceeding years, as did the collection of souvenirs from the battlefield.  This is an example of one of those early souvenirs; a pyrography cane designed for the 91st Pennsylvania Monument dedication on September 12, 1889 on Little Roundtop.  The monument is located south of Gettysburg, at the summit of Little Round Top.  The 91st Pennsylvania was organized on December 4, 1861 and mustered out in July 10, 1865.  They were engaged at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, and the Surrender at Appomattox.  At Gettysburg, they were one of the units that held Confederated forces at Little Roundtop and secured it as Union ground.  Dedicated by the state of Pennsylvania the monument is 25 feet tall and is in the shape of castle tower with a Maltese cross at the top symbolizing the Fifth Corps.

The cane measures 36 ¼” long and is in great condition.  There is a burnt (pyrograhic) cat’s eye pattern on the length of the cane.  Towards the front is a hand painted image of the 91st Pennsylvania Monument.  There is a 2” by 1 ½” plain spot of wood that houses the image.  The handle is knobby wood and measures 3”. The ferrule measures 1 ½” made of brass.    [MK] [ph:L]
