Here is a great little advertisement to tour the Gettysburg battlefield by airplane! This tour was offered by the Gettysburg Flying Service which was located on Oak Ridge at the Forney Farm right in the center of the first day’s battlefield at Gettysburg.
This little pamphlet measures six inches by three and three-quarters inches and depicts a plane flying over the Pennsylvania memorial with a phantom battle appearing in the clouds. The bottom shows the logo of the Gettysburg Flying Service. The exterior is a mustard yellow color with a green airplane and black wording and bottom trim.
Inside, the left and right pages fold out and reveal the information regarding the tour. There is a basic map of the Gettysburg battlefield and a short blurb about the sister organization “The Potomac Flying Service.” The interior is printed on cream colored heavyweight paper and carries through the yellow and green from the front page.
The reverse shows the rocky tree-covered terrain of the battlefield while Rebel soldiers charge in the clouds. The bottom trim reads “Gettysburg Airport / Oak Ridge – Forney Farm / Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.” This back page continues with the yellow and green theme.
This pamphlet is folded and so there is some wear and weakness to the folds from decades of existence. However, overall, it is in stable condition. It would be recommended to handle with care or display it open flat.
A super cool little advertisement for one of the lesser known ways to tour the battlefield in the 20th Century. A remnant of an airfield (of which evidence can still be seen on Oak Ridge) but is no longer in operation. [cla] [PH:L]
