Gettysburg relic desk set in nice condition made by John Good who was one of the better-known makers of these. Constructed of battlefield relics and a porcelain inkwell mounted on a wood base. Marked “GETTYSBURG. JULY 1-2-3, 1863 / WOOD FROM MEADE’S HEADQUARTERS.”
The wooden base of the piece meas. approximately 4” x 3” x 0.75” tall with a beveled front. The centerpiece of the set is a porcelain inkwell decorated with floral prints. Mounted around the inkwell are relics, including an Enfield bullet, a Union .58 three-ring minie ball, a small shell fragment, a round ball, and a chestnut. Two other small holes are in the wood apparently where other items were once attached.
John Good, who was a local Gettysburg furniture maker had a shop located in Race Horse Alley. He is well known for making many of these highly desirable Gettysburg relic desk sets. [jet] [ph:L]
