The official designation of this cartridge at the time was “US center-fire metallic cartridge” with the commercial designation being .50-70-450.  This represented caliber .50, powder charge 70 grains, and a bullet weight of 450 grains.

This is an internally primed .50-70 cartridge with copper case, and a Benet style primer, made at the Frankford Arsenal. This cartridge has an overall length of 2.272” and a case length of 1.760”. Good condition, no corrosion.

From 1866 to 1873, the .50-70 was the official U.S. Service cartridge. Remington introduced its famous “Rolling Block” around 1867-1868 chambered for the .50-70.  It remained in use until replaced by the .45-70 cartridge.  [jet] [ph:m]
