This celluloid pinback button has “50th Anniversary / 1863-1913” at top, and “Battle of Gettysburg” at bottom. In front center a Union and a Confederate soldier shake hands. Behind them a U.S. stars and strips flag is crossed with a Confederate battle flag. To the rear the landscape is indistinct but may represent the sunset of old animosities or the sunrise of a new national unity. Both soldiers retain their arms. On the ground around them is the refuse of war: the broken wheel of a gun carriage at left, a cannon barrel at right, at center between them, a drum. There are no bodies. Measures approx. 1 1/4" in diameter.
A nice period pin issued when there were still plenty of veterans around, and an interesting bit of military, political and social history. [sr]
