Souvenir hunters were combing the battlefield not long after the firing ceased. Many were caught and punished by being detailed to help burn dead horses. (Nowadays you might lose your car.) This Union canteen has a very nice, and dead real, painted inscription indicating it was picked up at the Wheatfield, the center of heavy fighting here at Gettysburg on July 2 when Longstreet launched two divisions against the Union left flank. The spout and brackets are long gone, but the front and back halves are present and solid, though covered with deep scaled rust, some scattered holes on the back side, and a few deep creases. The painted designation is very clear. A small collection or display inventory number is partially visible at upper left, indicating it was likely at one time in one of the several local battlefield relic displays. This is good opportunity to acquire a legitimate Gettysburg battlefield relic. [sr]
