Rare, teal colored bottle contained water from Katalysine Springs in Gettysburg, located on the first day's battlefield, just west of Willoughby Run near modern day Meredith Avenue. In 1868, the Gettysburg Lithia Springs Association began bottling and selling the "medicinal waters." The area was turned into a resort and spa, with the Springs Hotel opening in 1869. The building stood four stories tall, with a two story cupola, and elegant accommodations including a marble floor ballroom, separate men’s and women’s parlors, dining room and billiard room. The hotel did a brisk business in the 1870's and 1880's but by 1901 had declared bankruptcy. It was destroyed by fire in December 1917."
Bottle shows applied top with ring and is embossed on the front with the Katalysine Springs emblem. Underside of bottle is embossed, “WHITNEY GLASSWORKS, CLASSBORO, N.J.” Measures 10 ¼” tall by 3 ¼” in circumference at the base. No cracks, just a tiny chip on the rim of the lip. [sl]
