RARE GETTYSBURG RELIC DESK SET BY JOHN GOODE

This desk set consists of a wooden base that measures approximately 6” long x 3 ½” wide x 1” in height. The wood base has a nice beveled front with “Gettysburg, PA” painted in gold.

The relics attached to the wood base are arranged in two rows. The front row has a fired .58 caliber CS Gardner bullet, a Georgia state seal button, a porcelain ink well, a general service eagle button, and a dropped .58 caliber three-groove “minie” ball. The back row has an iron canister ball, a fired .58 caliber “star base” minie ball, a 3” piece of bayonet blade, a fired .69 caliber round ball, and another large iron canister ball. The central piece is the white porcelain ink well which is decorated with painted flowers and a bird. The lid uses a cork protruding from the bottom to seal the ink well. This cork has worn down and shrunk over the years and the top can easily fall off when handling this piece.

Written in ink on the underside of the base is “By John Good of Gettysburg” and “Georgia Meteggar Phila”.

John Goode was a Gettysburg cabinetmaker who worked on wood projects for many of the local residents, before and at the turn of the century (1870s-1900s).  He was a prominent assembler of relic displays and owned a small shop on Race Horse Alley off Chambersburg Street.  [jet]
