Here is an early souvenir walking cane made of wood taken from the famous Gettysburg battlefield area of Culp’s Hill. This wooden cane measures about 35" long. The handle area retains a covering of the original bark. The entire surface length of the cane appears to been sanded smooth. It was then decorated with multiple wavy designs effected by lightly burning the surface. Below the handle on one side, “CULPS HILL” is boldly outlined, burned into the cane. Corps badges of the seven corps present at Gettysburg are also burnt in.

Cane is in very good condition. Shows a few small cracks in the surface, but is still sturdy.

There is a photo of young local Gettysburg boys at Devil’s Den in 1900 displaying canes to sell as souvenirs. They are- Emory Daugherty, Arthur Shields, William Shields, Clarence Shields, and Thomas Rosensteel. In the photo is the burner that was used for burning the design into the woodburned canes. Photo is included in the book, “Adams County Area Pictorial History”.  [sl]
