The photograph was taken from the observation deck that once stood in the Ziegler’s Grove area. The view is looking slightly southwest. The photo is framed and meas. approx. 17.00 x 14.00 inches.
The Codori house and barn are at the extreme right edge of the photo while Big and Little Round Top are at the extreme left edge. All the ground between these two points and from Zeigler’s Grove south, is visible. Hancock Avenue starts in the foreground and runs through the center of the photo. In the middle distance is Webb Ave which is no longer there. Meade’s equestrian statue is visible along the middle left edge. The fields in the foreground that are to the west of Hancock Ave are in crops while those to the left are open as they are now. A close view reveals the Peach Orchard in the far distance as well as the area where the 1st Minnesota made their famous charge. The Pennsylvania Monument has not yet been built. Of course “The Angle” and the “High Water Mark” are clearly seen.
Image is clear and crisp with good detail and contrast. The sky area shows some faint water droplets but this is nothing that detracts.
The back of the frame has a nicely done hand drawn label reading “THE SCENE OF PICKETT’s CHARGE / TIPTON PHOTO.” There is also a clipped description of the image from a previous seller.
A wonderful Gettysburg image. [AD]
