This is an excavated pocket watch. Unfortunately it was made long after the Civil War. This is a silver-plated, brass pocket watch. Arabic numerals with crystal face. “Eska Special”. Eska is one of the small, lesser-known watch brands. At the end of World War I in 1918, expectations for an economic upswing led to the creation of a number of watchmaking firms. One of them was Sylvan Kocher & Cie. S.A. of Grenchen. Amongst its many brand names, Kocher registered “Eska,” the phonetic spelling in French of Kocher’s initials “eS Ka.” This particular watch was made by Eska Mfg. Co. in Baltimore, Md. Then lost by a visitor to Gettysburg. Recovered in the 1960s, in woods to the west of the Big Round Top parking lot on Second Days’ Battlefield at Gettysburg.
This relic was once part of the Iva Rosensteel collection. Mrs. Rosensteel is the sister of George Rosensteel, who started the Electric Map museum in Gettysburg. Eventually, this grape shot became a part of the Rider collection in Gettysburg, which remained in the family until The Horse Soldier purchased the collection in June 2016. [jet]
