Known as “THE HERO OF GETTYSBURG” John Burns was the only citizen of the town to fight in the battle. He was wounded out on McPherson’s Ridge just west of the town on July 1, 1863.
Image shows Burns seated in front of a painted backdrop of a porch. He is posed with his right arm resting on a covered table next to a closed book. Mr. Burns is dressed in a dark civilian suit with a white shirt open at the collar and on his head he wears a high crown broad brimmed hat.
The bottom of the mount bears a printed facsimile of Burn’s signature. Below this is the publishing information stating that the image was “Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1863, by Tyson Brothers, Gettysburg.”
Image has some light surface dirt on bottom and around edges. The image itself is bright with good contrast.
Reverse has a label telling the story of Burns participation in the battle of Gettysburg. [AD]
