Cane was made with wood gathered on the battlefield of Gettysburg. These canes are often referred to as “Veterans” canes and were made by local people for sale at reunions and local Gettysburg events. The wood was harvested from different locations on the battlefield, carved into canes, burned with different designs and decorations and then stamped with the location on the field where the wood was found.
This cane is a rather straight piece of wood that meas. approx. 35.00 inches long. The top 9.50 inches still retains some of the original bark that has smoothed over time from handling and use.
Burned into the wood of the cane just below this area are the badges of the seven Corps who fought at Gettysburg. Also in this area is a blank spot that has been stamped with the following ink “GETTYSBURG JULY 1-2-3 1863, WOOD FROM ROUND TOP.” Stamping is not crisp but it is readable. The rest of the cane is decorated with geometric shapes.
All decorations are visible but the wood has darkened considerable at the bottom.
