This famous lithograph map was published by P.S. Duval & Son, Philadelphia, 1863. This is one of the earliest printed plans of the battle, possibly the earliest. It was originally issued as bound into Ditterline’s Sketch of the Battles of Gettysburg, a 24-page pamphlet published within months after the events it describes.
Measures 21.5 x 17.5”, mounted in period frame with inner gilt trim, and with wood reverse backing & hang-wire. The map itself is encompassed in a centered oval measuring 18” in height, 15” in width. Lower right corner box inscription: “Field of Gettysburg / July 1st 2nd & 3rd / Prepared / by T. Ditterline”. Lower left corner “Remarks” explain each day’s troop movements. The lithograph is light soiled and faded round the margins, with small 1” blemish in lower right margin outside the “Field of Gettysburg” inscription. The oval map is clean & crisp with a light, unobtrusive water stain along lower margin. Else VG.
Superb Gettysburg collectible. Extremely scarce.
