Presentation inscription: Handle: “Autumn Leaf, no. 262”; Gavel head: “Presented by/P.N.G’s Susan Oakley and Jane R. Oakey/Nov. 5, 1921/ in appreciation at their visit to Gettysburg to receive the Decoration of Chivalry/Oct. 1, 1926.” Barrel shaped head measures 3 x 1.625”, handle 9” in length. Somewhat weathered but solid; cursive inscription entirely legible.
An “autumn leaf” gavel awarded by a pair of “P.N.G.”[Pennsylvania National Guard?] ladies to a group coming to Gettysburg to receive the “Decoration of Chivalry” may well have had to something to do with autumnal season colors. Invites further research. Handsome Gettysburg souvenir gavel.
