Here is a large, hunting powder flask made by the American Flask & Company for the civilian market of the 1850s and 60s. This “AM. FLASK & CAP CO.” marked specimen was part of the Swope / Johnson Collection of artifacts once housed at the Longstreet Memorial Park on the Gettysburg Battlefield.
The S. Edward Swope collection was handed down to his son, Franklin Swope and then subsequently handed down to Swope’s brother-in-law, W.J. “Johnny” Johnson. Mr. Johnson owned and operated a small souvenir/food shack located on Millerstown Road at the intersection of West Confederate Avenue called Longstreet Park. Longstreet Park was located next to the “Eisenhower” Tower. Many of the relics from this collection were on display from circa 1950’s-1970’s and were later sold at auction.
Used with a percussion pistol or longarm, this flask exhibits the conventional tear-shaped copper body that bears the dog and game motif with four pheasants and a large dog embossed on both faces as the main picture. Device measures 7” long and has a 3¼” wide swell. Constructed of sheet copper, the artifact is missing its screw-off flask top spout / charger, but retains its brass collar and thumb-piece cutter. Stampings on the top are visible on the flask.
All body seams are strong and show no evidence of splitting or repairs. Two, brass swivel rings are attached to the flask at the upper neck to secure a carry cord or strap. A dark, rich bronze patina envelopes the entire flask body and presents a pleasing appearance. Never cleaned. Flask body has two small light dents and shows normal tiny dings from use and storage. A nice civilian powder flask in excellent tight condition.
