This musket was recovered on the battlefield by Daniel E. A. Keefauver sometime in the 1880’s or 90’s. It was passed down through his family until it was sold and came into the possession of the present owner.
The musket is a three-banded Model 1861 Springfield with all metal surfaces pitted and dark from exposure to the elements. No maker or date can be made out on the lock. The wood is in good condition. There is a crack running around the gun at the wrist. This crack begins on one side in the area of the trigger guard and runs around to the opposite side. There is also an area of heavy wear on the edge of the comb. The rifle is complete with all three barrel bands and band springs, both sling swivels, front and rear sights and the proper ramrod.
With the item is a notarized letter from a member of the Keefauver family (his daughter-in-law, Marie M. Keefauver) attesting to the history of the piece. “…Daniel Edward Adam Keefauver was born in 1885 and living in Gettysburg and found the rifle somewhere on the battlefield in Gettysburg, Pa. After his death in 1949 my husband, Daniel S. Keefauver had the rifle until his death in 2006 at the age of 89”.
