This book was published in 1890 and was written by John E. Pitzer who was a member of the local GAR Post in Gettysburg. The volume runs approx. 100 pages and tells the story of the battle. The back of the book has an order of battle for both sides and the locations of monuments that were on the field at that time.
The book is in good clean condition with a photo of the author on the cover. The interior is also clean. The paper has yellowed some but there is hardly any wear.
John E. Pitzer was born May 19, 1839 just outside Gettysburg. During the war he served as a Sergeant in Company C, 165th Pennsylvania Infantry from October 16, 1862- July 28, 1863. During his service the 165th was part of the 7th Corps where it served in eastern Virginia. After the war Pitzer was well known as a Battlefield Guide. He died in Gettysburg on July 31, 1916 and is buried in Evergreen Cemetery.
This item was procured from the Rosensteel family who are well-known for their collection of artifacts from, and related to, the battle of Gettysburg which formed the nucleus of the present day National Park collection.
