Top bar reads “GETTYSBURG VETERAN” with an arch above it that reads “JULY 1-2-3” with the year “1863” between the arch and the bar. Reverse of the bar has an operating pin.
Suspended from the bar is a dirty red, white & blue ribbon approx. 2.75 inches long x 1.50 inches wide with a swallowtail bottom. Also suspended by the top bar but in front of the ribbon is a disc with the Coat of Arms of the state of New York at center. Around the edges is “DEDICATION OF STATE MONUMENT AT GETTYSBURG JULY 1, 2, 3, 1893-NEW YORK DAY.” The reverse has the New York monument from the Gettysburg National Cemetery at center surrounded by a laurel wreath and flanked by the dates “1863-1893.” Engraved on the edge of the medal is “E. B. STEPHENS 137TH N.Y. INF’T, 3RD BRIGADE, 2ND DIVISION, 20TH A.C.”
Aside from the surface dirt on the ribbon the medal itself is in good condition showing only light wear overall.
Edward B. Stephens (spelled Stevens on some rosters) was 39 years old when he was commissioned a 1st Lieutenant and Quartermaster of the 137th New York on August 22, 1862. He held this position throughout the service of the regiment being mustered out on June 9, 1865. The 137th served with the 12th Corps, Army of the Potomac and then in the 20th Corps, Army of the Cumberland. They were engaged at Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wauhatchie, Missionary Ridge, Lookout Mountain, Ringgold, Rocky Face Ridge, Resaca, Cassville, Lost Mountain, Kennesaw Mountain, Peachtree Creek, Siege of Atlanta and numerous smaller actions during the March to the Sea and the campaign in the Carolinas.
