Item Code: 172-2863

This handsome longarm is a straight bolt-action, breech loading Winchester Model 1879 2nd model, 45-70 centerfire repeating rifle often termed the ‘Hotchkiss Magazine Gun’. Made by the US Springfield Armory using Winchester components, this rifle was Winchester’s first bolt-action rifle developed by Benjamin B. Hotchkiss who invented the bolt-action system that included a six-shot magazine in the buttstock. Records indicate that 999 units of the 2nd model Navy’s were produced. This Second Model Navy rifle has a round, 28¾” long, Springfield-made barrel martially marked with proofmarks “V / P / eagle head” at left breech. Directly above the proofs are the Navy markings that show the “US” and the anchor motif. Left side of barrel receiver exhibits Winchester maker marks and Hotchkiss patent dates that run from Oct 1860 through July 1878. All markings clear, sharp and clean. Serial #5385 visible on left lip of receiver along with sub-inspector stampings of “H. N.” on barrel, bolt, and bolt stems.

Rifle exhibits no original case colors or bluing but does show a pleasing, smooth, semi-bright scheen on all gunmetal parts. Some areas of light oxidation seen scattered on barrel. Barrel exhibits an adjustable folding rear sight, a front blade sight, and a very fine, shiny bright bore. Barrel is secured to the original, excellent condition oil-stained, black walnut, straight grip stock with two steel barrel bands with sling swivels. Weapon retains the original black leather adjustable sling strap in very good condition. No cartouches on stock. Slightly curved butt plate secured with two large wood screws. Stamped with digit “32” on tang and on the upper corner right side of stock. Rifle exhibits crisp and strong mechanics. Safety tab is loose on receiver. A fine Winchester-Hotchkiss 2nd Model bolt action Navy rifle.
