In 1842, the need for more modern percussion ignition systems on US military arms signaled the end of the flintlock age and started the age of the cap and ball muzzleloader firearm. This weapon, in very good overall condition, is an original .69 caliber Model 1842 smoothbore muzzleloader made by the Harper’s Ferry Arsenal. The surface metal has been lightly cleaned but exhibits a pleasing gray color blended with light scattered areas of rust pitting overall. Hammer shows moderate pitting at upper area. Lock markings are the standard “Eagle / US” in front of the hammer but stamping is thin and worn. Back of hammer shows “HARPERS / FERRY / 1851” in strong clear markings. Lock mechanics are tight and crisp. All proof marks of “V / P / eaglehead” are worn down but visible on the barrel. The unique Harpers Ferry stamping “P B / P” clearly visible on the left side of breech area. Bore shows light to moderate scattered pitting. Two cartouches are visible on stock opposite the hammer but they are thin. Black walnut stock appears not to have been cleaned and has two large (1½” high) letters handcarved on left stock that shows “C. M”. Stock also stamped with “24 / C” just above the butt tang. Also has its share of scattered dings and nicks along with mild edge rounding. Both swivel slings present as is the original ramrod with its threaded tip. A fine representative ’42 Harper’s Ferry smoothbore musket.
