ALLIN CONVERSION MODEL 1866 RIFLE - a.k.a. 2ND MODEL

$950.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 362-515

This is a Springfield manufactured muzzleloader that has been converted to a breechloader using the Erskin S. Allin design. The conversion was completed at the Springfield Armory.  The 58-caliber bore was changed to a 50-caliber centerfire by lining the barrel. The breech was also converted to the distinctive ‘trapdoor” breechblock. Finishes were the same as the model 1863 muskets. Lockplate markings are an Eagle” with” U.S.” over SPRINGFIELD” and the date 1863 or 1864. Also the breech is marked with an “Eagle” over ‘1866”. Springfield altered 25,000 of these muskets.

This rifle, dated 1863, has a nice gun metal patina on all the iron parts except the lock which is case. Crisp working mechanism. The ramrod is original. Bore has very good rifling and a nice very semi-bright finish. The stock is a dark patina and has some nicks and scratches from normal use. The one inspector’s cartouches located on the opposite side of the lockplate is visible. This is a nice example of the Allin converted Springfield.
