Item Code: 172-2855

Produced by the Springfield Armory, this .45-70 caliber, centerfire, cartridge weapon, serial number #274341, is one of over 160,000 made from 1879 through 1885. Rifle is identified by serial # to Company D, 2nd Arkansas Volunteer Infantry. No further research done. The rifle’s iron surfaces wear a smooth, dark plum patina and show no remains of bluing or color casehardening with scattered pitting overall. Barrel stamped with proof marks “V / P / eaglehead / P”. The low-arched breechblock bears the stamping “MODEL 1879”. Mechanics crisp but could use oiling. Bore has strong rifling with scattered pitting. Would clean to semi-bright. Lockplate markings shows a sharp spreadwinged eagle motif with the “US / SPRINGFIELD” forward of the hammer.

Black walnut stock appears never cleaned and exhibits a rich, mellow patina. Has a few light dings and handling marks. Both iron barrel bands present with the sling swivel on the upper mount. Rear swivel on the triggerguard is missing. Long-range rear sight has the folding ladder but is missing the open-sight slider. Front blade sight on the muzzle. No bayonet. Stock has a single 1884-dated cartouche on left wrist. Weapon retains its original small button tip ramrod with the cleaning patch slot below it present. Two piece iron trigger guard. Screws unbuggered save for the hammer screw. A nice untouched trapdoor rifle.
