Original, 1863-dated, .58 caliber Model 1863 “Savage Arms” contract percussion rifle-musket in good condition overall. A product of the Savage Revolving Fire Arms Company of Middletown, Connecticut circa 1862-64. Savage was a major contractor in the Civil War who supplied the government with some 25,500 such muskets for the army. This single-shot muzzleloader retains a nice appearance and has been moderately cleaned. Barrel exhibits a pleasing light gray patina overall with scattered pinprick rusting overall especially at the barrel breech area. Musket retains its black walnut stock, two-leaf rear sight, reproduction iron nipple, original “S” shaped hammer, reproduction steel ramrod with threaded tip, and all original barrel bands, sling swivels, and butt strap. Bands have been cleaned as well as all iron mountings. Black walnut stock is in excellent condition overall and wears a handsome patina. Scattered dings are visible on the stock. Mechanics strong but hammer not tight. One light government cartouche visible on the flat opposite the hammer. Lockplate shows a nice spreadwinged eagle motif above letters “U.” and “S.”. Bolster eagle worn thin. Maker’s address front of hammer with “SAVAGE R. F. A. Co / MIDDLETOWN. CON.” Stamped on lockplate behind hammer is “1863”. Top flat of breech has moderate pitting with no date visible. Government proof marks “V / P / eagle head” are worn but visible on the left facet. An original Civil War “Savage” contract musket longarm.
